Centre for Innovative Bioscience Education (BioCEN) PL
10th Anniversary of the Centre for Innovative Bioscience Education - BioCEN (in Polish)
BioCEN - od 10 lat odczarowuje biotechnologię!
Formerly: Science Festival School
Centre for Innovative Bioscience Education (BioCEN) is the unique activity in Poland, which tries to reduce the gap between science and society by conducting educational activities popularizing the theme of modern biology - open lectures, workshops for students and all interested people, courses for biology teachers. The International Institute became a co-founder (2003) of the Centre for Innovative Bioscience Education along with two other PAS Institutes: the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology (IBD), the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics (IBB) and the Warsaw Festival of Science. BioCEN leads two open laboratories: the main laboratory in the IIMCB and second laboratory at Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
All activities are focused on improving biology education and awareness of biology in society. Effectiveness of BioCEN in fulfilling these goals is based on bringing practical knowledge about cutting edge biology to the teachers and pupils by young and enthusiastic scientists who have “hands on” experience in the topics of interest. The public-oriented laboratory workshops cover various themes of modern biology such as DNA research, proteomics or biotechnology. The participating in such workshops is the only chance for pupils to work and learn in professional equipped biological laboratory.
During courses organized by CIBE for biology teachers we try to build a connection between them and scientists so they can feel they are a part of the scientific community. Since we strongly encourage teachers to implement practical protocols at schools, we not only train them but also equip them with classroom scenarios and affordable experimental kits, equipment and reagents that can be used in a school.
