PhD Student position
Laboratory of Iron Homeostasis
The Iron Homeostasis Laboratory at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw, headed by Katarzyna Mleczko-Sanecka, is seeking for a motivated and talented individual for a position of a PhD student within the project: “Determining iron dependencies of tissue resident macrophages”.
Tissue-resident macrophages are currently considered as the most heterogeneous cells in our body, but their precise characterization at the molecular and functional levels is largely lacking. In particular, it is not well understood to which extend individual macrophage populations depend on iron supplies and which routes of iron acquisition critically contribute to the proper balance of this micronutrient. Successful candidate for a PhD student will combine cell-based assays with mouse-based experiments to determine if iron-deficient conditions, or depletion of transferrin receptor 1, the most constitutive factor responsible for iron uptake, affect functions of selected specialized macrophage subsets.
The PhD student will be selected in an open competition, according to the procedure complying with the rules of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers as a part of HR Excellence in Research strategy https://www.iimcb.gov.pl/en/institute/hr-excellence.
We are hosted by IIMCB (www.iimcb.gov.pl), the top-ranked (A+) Polish research institute in biology, that offers cutting-edge equipment and facilities together with an excellent, international and interdisciplinary research environment.
Requirements:
• Master's degree in biology, biotechnology, medicine or related field,
• good knowledge of molecular and cell biology,
• strong interests in iron biology, macrophage functions and organismal (patho)physiology,
• motivation for experimental work, passion for science,

• experience in mouse/rat-based studies or willingness to work with animals,
• readiness to learn new skills, take challenges and work independently; analytical thinking,
• proficiency in spoken and written English and good communication skills,
• research experience abroad and research achievements (e.g. manuscripts in preparation) will be a plus, but not required
