Postdoctoral Researcher
Postdoctoral Researcher position in Laboratory of Protein Structure.
The Laboratory of Protein Structure at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IIMCB), Warsaw, headed by Prof. Marcin Nowotny is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the project that aims at the development of antiviral substances for treatment of COVID-19. The position is funded in frame of TEAM (POIR.04.04.00-00-20E7/16) grant awarded by Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) entitled: “Structural and biochemical studies of the mechanism of LINE-1 retrotransposition and hepadnaviral replication”.
The laboratory is located in the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (www.iimcb.gov.pl) – one of the top-ranked (A+) Polish research institutes, that provides stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment and opportunities of the large biomedical campus. Research topics at IIMCB cover the wide area of structural biology, bioinformatics, computer modeling, molecular and cell biology, neurobiology, cancer biology, and developmental genomics (zebrafish model). The Institute is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, has excellent core facilities and supportive administration. IIMCB benefits from numerous generous funding schemes for basic research through grants from international and national sources www.iimcb.gov.pl/en/research/grants).
Laboratory interest: Research of the Laboratory of Protein Structure focuses on the structure and mechanism of proteins involved in the processing of genetic information (http://bit.ly/nowotny-lab). The primary methods are protein crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy and protein biochemistry. The group also has a long track record of tight collaborations with pharmaceutical industry in drug development. The person employed for the advertised position will be responsible for establishing and using computational methods of drug development: docking, virtual screening, design of fragment-based strategy for screening by crystallography, computational lead optimization, and homology modeling. These approaches will be used to identify potential inhibitors and to improve their properties, so that they can be developed into drugs.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be selected in an open competition, according to the procedure complying with the rules of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers as a part of HR Excellence in Research strategy https://www.iimcb.gov.pl/en/institute/hr-excellence.
As a Postdoctoral Researcher: You will be responsible for homology modeling of viral protein structures, virtual screening for ligands interacting with viral enzymes, computational optimization of hits, selection of small compounds potentially interacting with viral proteins and design of crystallographic strategies for their verification. You will be involved in data analysis and manuscript preparation. You will also assist in coordinating daily activities and supervising of the PhD students.
