Laboratory of Iron Homeostasis
Laboratory of Iron Homeostasis at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IIMCB), Warsaw, headed by Katarzyna Mleczko-Sanecka, PhD is looking for a two PhD students. You will join the project entitled “Identifying unique adaptive responses of red pulp macrophages to iron deficiency” carried out as the SONATA grant (UMO-2020/38/E/NZ4/00511) of the National Science Centre, Poland.
The project aims to significantly advance our understanding of an organism’s adaptation to iron deficiency. Specifically, we identified that low body iron supplies trigger specific but still elusive mechanisms that alter functions of splenic red pulp macrophages, cells that phagocytose aged erythrocytes and thus are responsible for body iron recycling. Our further work aims now to better understand these adaptive responses and determine their physiological role for the whole organism.
One of PhD students will be responsible for comprehensively characterization of the functional adaptation of RPMs to iron deficiency and identification of its molecular triggers. He/she will also determine how this ‘rewiring’ affects RPMs’ inflammatory status. The second PhD student will explore how the abrogation of this ‘adaptation program’ affects the organism, including iron and blood homeostasis. To this end, he/she will employ new conditional knock-out mice characterized by specific suppression of the RPMs’ adaptation to low iron conditions.
The admissions process is conducted through the Doctoral School website system. The PhD student can apply to this specific project carried out as part of the Warsaw-4-PhD doctoral school via website (the application system will be activated from 24th May, deadline for sending application is 6th, June).
